Attorney for Berkeley Republicans Slams ACLU

She calls it. The ACLU doesn’t care about free speech- just leftist speech.

Attorney Harmeet Dillon who is representing the Berkeley College Republicans in their free speech case against the University of California, Berkeley over failing to allow Ann Coulter to speak on campus on equal terms, slammed the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for ignoring the case.”

“I don’t see the ACLU here in this room, which is unfortunate,” Dillon said, after listing several prominent Democrats who join her in opposing Berkeley’s efforts to restrict Coulter’s speech.

Asked whether there was “something special” about suing UC Berkeley, the home of the Free Speech Movement, Dillon answered:

“I never thought I’d be on the same side of an issue as Willie Brown, Bernie Sanders, Bill Maher, Keith Ellison, and every other person who’s a lawyer. Now, there are some amateur lawyers, like Howard Dean, who looks up a case on the Internet and then thinks he’s a Supreme Court scholar — and, you know, some of our members of Congress who play lawyers on TV, apparently. But no, I think I don’t know any lawyers, serious lawyers practicing constitutional law, who think that this is appropriate.

“And I have had dozens and dozens of emails and calls from lawyers who don’t know me, around the country. They all start with, ‘I don’t support what Ann Coulter says, but,” you know, or, ‘I hate what Donald Trump stands for, but you’re absolutely right on this, and this cannot stand.’

“And nor should it stand if it were happening on a conservative college campus and it were liberal students whose views were being marginalized.”

She noted that her passion for free speech issues was born when she was a student at Dartmouth, when some students were expelled for criticizing a music professor in print.

“Who represented us in the hinterlands of New Hampshire? The American Civil Liberties Union came in to represent my colleagues on the Dartmouth Review.”

She remarked, in that context, that the ACLU’s absence at Berkeley was noteworthy.

As Breitbart News noted last month, Dhillon once served on the board of the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the ACLU.

She is a noted Trump supporter, and serves as the vice chair of the California Republican Party. She is reportedly under consideration to be named to lead the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Dhillon is also representing Trump supporters who were attacked by anti-Trump rioters outside a Trump rally in their lawsuit against the city of San Jose for failing to protect them from the mob.

Critics say the ACLU has been drifting in a left direction for many years, often abandoning its absolute adherence to basic civil liberties in favor of a state-centered, redistributionist, and identify-inflected concept of rights.

NYT: Immigration Hard-Liners Rising in Trump Administration

Advocates who want America’s immigration laws enforced have found a home in President Donald Trump’s administration, the New York Times’ Nicholas Kulish reports.

For years, a network of immigration hard-liners in Washington was known chiefly for fending off proposals to legalize the status of more people. But with the election of a like-minded president, these groups have moved unexpectedly to offense from defense, with some of their leaders now in positions to carry out their agenda on a national scale.

Mr. Trump’s senior White House adviser, Stephen Miller, worked tirelessly to defeat immigration reform as a staff member for Senator Jeff Sessions, now the attorney general. Gene P. Hamilton, who worked on illegal immigration as Mr. Sessions’s counsel on the Judiciary Committee, is now a senior counselor at the Department of Homeland Security, the parent agency of the Border Patrol and ICE, where Mr. Feere is working. Julia Hahn, who wrote about immigration for Breitbart — with headlines like “Republican-Led Congress Oversees Large-Scale Importation of Somali Migrants” — has followed her former boss, Stephen K. Bannon, to the White House as a deputy policy strategist.

Their influence is already being felt. Mr. Trump is known for his sound-bite-ready pledges to deport millions of people here illegally and to build a border wall, but some of the administration’s more technical yet critical changes to immigration procedures came directly from officials with long ties to the hard-line groups.

Even those who have labored for decades to scale back immigration did not expect such a dramatic change. “This is inconceivable a year ago,” said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies. “Frankly, it’s almost inconceivable six months ago.”

One police officer killed, another wounded in Paris shooting – police

PARIS, April 20 (Reuters) – One policeman was killed and two others wounded in a shooting incident in central Paris on Thursday night, police and the interior ministry said.

The shooting, in which the assailant was also killed, took place on the Champs-Elysees shopping boulevard just days ahead of France’s presidential election.

A witness told Reuters that a man got out of a car at the scene and began shooting with a machine gun. A police source also said more shots had been fired at another location near the scene.

A French interior ministry spokesman said it was too early to say what the motive of the attack was, but that it was clear the police officers had been deliberately targeted.

The French prosecutors’ office said the counter-terrorism office had opened an inquiry.

Three police sources said, however, that the shooting could have been an attempt at an armed robbery.

“I came out of the Sephora shop and I was walking along the pavement where an Audi 80 was parked. A man got out and opened fire with a kalashnikov on a policeman,” witness Chelloug, a kitchen assistant, told Reuters.

“The policeman fell down. I heard six shots, I was afraid. I have a two-year-old girl and I thought I was going to die… He shot straight at the police officer.”

Police authorities called on the public to avoid the area.

TV footage showed the Arc de Triomphe monument and top half of the Champs Elysees packed with police vans, lights flashing and heavily armed police shutting the area down after what was described by one journalist as a major exchange of fire near a Marks and Spencers store.

The incident came as French voters prepared to go to the polls on Sunday in the most tightly-contested presidential election in living memory.

France has lived under a state of emergency since 2015 and has suffered a spate of Islamist militant attacks that have killed more than 230 people in the past two years.

Earlier this week, two men were arrested in Marseille whom police said had been planning an attack ahead of the election.

A machine gun, two handguns and three kilos of TATP explosive were among the weapons found at a flat in the southern city along with jihadist propaganda materials according to the Paris prosecutor.

Report: 300 U.S. Marines ‘En Route’ to Taliban Stronghold in Afghanistan

An estimated 300 U.S. Marines are heading to a Taliban stronghold in the southern Afghanistan province of Helmand, one of the deadliest regions of the ongoing war for coalition forces located along the Pakistan border, reports Marine Corps Times.

The American troops are expected to reach their destination — where the Taliban has largely reversed previous U.S./NATO coalition gains — by the end of this month. Nearly all of Helmand has once again fallen under the control of the Taliban. Helmand sits next to Kandahar province, widely known as the birthplace of the Taliban.

The 300 additional Marines, with the appropriate support, “can absolutely make a difference in Helmand province,” retired Gen. David Petraeus, who served as the top commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan between 2010 to 2011, told Marine Corps Times.

He added that the Marines’ advise-and-assist mission could provide the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) “the support they need to reverse the momentum of the Taliban in that important province that sits astride the critical ‘Ring Road’ that connects the southern and western parts of the country to Kabul.”

The ANDSF includes police and army units.

Marine Corps Times reports:

The deployment of Marines from the II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, will be the largest Marine deployment to Afghanistan since 2014, when the U.S. military’s combat mission known as Operation Enduring Freedom officially ended.

By the end of April, the Marines will be in Helmand province as Task Force Southwest, replacing the Army’s Task Force Forge. During their nine months in Helmand, the Marines will train the Afghan National Army’s 215th Corps and the 505th Zone National Police in marksmanship, indirect fire and small-unit tactics and other skills, Marine Corps officials said.

According to various assessments, the Taliban controls more territory now than during any time since U.S./NATO troops removed the jihadist group from power in 2001.

Long War Journal recently reported that the terrorist group controls (7) or contests (6) nearly all of the 14 districts in Helmand.

The United States military has long considered Helmand to be a major Taliban stronghold.

“Helmand province is becoming increasingly dangerous for U.S. troops. In March, three American soldiers were shot at an Afghan military base in an apparent insider attack and in February, a Special Forces soldier was severely wounded in Sangin,” notes Marine Corps Times.

Although the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) has established a presence in the Afghanistan region, the Taliban remains the strongest jihadist group there. The two groups have fought one another for turf, influence, and recruits.

However, some Afghan officials and the U.S. military believe they have also worked together.

Former President Barack Obama reportedly approved the deployment of the 300 Marines before leaving office.

In the year after the former commander-in-chief declared an end to the U.S. combat mission and withdrew most American troops from the war-devastated country, the State Department deemed Taliban jihadists the world’s chief perpetrators of terrorism in 2015, with 1,093 individual attacks.

“Make no mistake, though we are no longer in a combat role in Afghanistan, it is still a combat environment,” Col. Matthew Reid, deputy task force commander, told Marine Corps Times in January. “As Marines, we train and deploy with a combat mindset.”

This year, U.S. Forces-Afghanistan (USFOR-A) revealed that the American-backed Afghan government had lost control of nearly half (43 percent) of the country, primarily to the Taliban.

The rest of the country was either contested or under the control/influence of terrorists.

Nevertheless, U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster sounded optimistic over the weekend that U.S.-backed forces will defeat the Taliban.

He told TOLO News during his first trip to Afghanistan:

The Taliban must be defeated as well. They can be defeated in a number of ways. For those that are reconcilable, who are now willing to join their Afghan brothers to strengthen the Afghan state, to end the violence, to be part of the political process, I think your president and the chief executive officer they will welcome them back in. So it is their choice now.

The Taliban has refused to participate in peace negotiations with the Afghan government, saying they have no reason to engage in talks because they are winning the war.

American Gen. John Nicholson, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said late last year that the Taliban generates nearly 60 percent of its funding from trafficking opium primarily cultivated in Helmand.

In its most recent assessment, the United Nations reported that Helmand remains the top opium-producing province in Afghanistan.

The war-ravaged country is the world’s top supplier of opium and its heroin derivative.

Introduction

Some have suggested that President Trump has elevated his daughter Ivanka Trump to a position of power inside the White House because of her “loyalty” to him, but based on the people she chose to surround herself with just prior to Trump taking office, her loyalty to her father seems suspect.

Multiple news sources reported that in January, shortly before Donald Trump was inaugurated as President, Ivanka Trump had a “secret dinner party” that was organized by her advisor Dina Powell. The guest list seems to not include a single person who supported her father during the election. Instead the list included people who didn’t merely support her father’s opponent Hillary Clinton during the election, but who actively and publicly insulted, demeaned, criticized and attacked her father both before and after his election.

Given Ivanka’s role in what The Populist has referred to as The Coup against the ideas that Donald Trump promised his supporters he believed and Ivanka’s role setting policy in the administration, it’s disturbing. Ivanka used the occasion not merely to have dinner with but to seek advice from the Trump haters. It also helps explain headlines like “Ivanka Trump influenced my father to launch Syria strikes, reveals brother Eric.”

Why would Ivanka Trump surround herself with a group of people who clearly loathe her father, the ideas he ran on and his supporters? Why seek counsel from those who worked to defeat and humiliate Donald Trump? As the Los Angeles Time reported:

It looks like Ivanka is trying to regain the respect of the Democrats and independents with whom she socialized for much of her adult life. People working with her and her husband have leaked reports about how they are persuading the president not to revoke protection for the LGBT community or to completely defund Planned Parenthood.

During the transition, she helped bring former vice president and environmental activist Al Gore to Trump Tower to brief her father, a skeptic about climate change, and floated the idea of becoming a climate czar within the administration. She is now focused on child care and maternity leave, an issue historically championed by Democrats.

“She is very well-versed in the issues, thoughtful and sincere,” said Sheila Marcelo, the chief executive of Care.com, who attended a dinner party in January at the home of Wendi Deng at which Ivanka Trump solicited ideas from business executives, many of whom had been fundraising for Hillary Clinton during the campaign.

First, we’ll look at the stories about party and then go through the attendees and what they’ve said about Donald Trump and the ideas he espoused during the election.

Donald Trump is known to prize loyalty, but this trait does not seem to have been passed on to either his daughter nor her close advisor Dina Powell, who has risen quickly in the administration and put together the event. Powell was made deputy defense advisor shortly before Donald Trump ordered a missile strike on Syria.

It’s hard to grasp why she or Ivanka surround Ivanka with people so hostile to the agenda that got her father elected…until you look at the details about Dina Powell, her Goldman Sachs colleague Gary Cohn or The Coup they’ve undertaken.

The private gathering was organized by Dina Powell, a longtime Goldman Sachs executive who has been advising Ivanka Trump and this week announced she would be leaving the financial firm to take a job in the White House as an assistant to the president and senior counselor for economic initiatives. Ivanka Trump was instrumental in recruiting her to the new administration, an aide said.

The group, according to one attendee, included Tina Brown, the longtime journalist and magazine editor; Mika Brzezinski, co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”; Tory Burch, the fashion designer behind the eponymous brand; model Christy Turlington Burns; Ursula Burns, chair of Xerox; Cathy Engelbert, chief executive of Deloitte; Nancy Gibbs, managing editor of Time magazine; Cindi Leive, editor of Glamour; Dana Perino, former White House press secretary; Ginni Rometty, head of IBM; and Pattie Sellers, executive director of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women summits.

Two men — Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League and former mayor of New Orleans, and Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation — also attended. Morial and Rometty seemed to have the seats of honor, on either side of Ivanka Trump.

Ivanka Trump Threw a Secret Dinner Party at Wendi Murdoch’s Apartment

the guest list was comprised of “IBM CEO Ginni Rometty, Deloitte CEO Cathy Engelbert, Xerox chairman Ursula Burns, Tory Burch, Mika Brzezinski, Tina Brown, Christy Turlington Burns, Time editor Nancy Gibbs, Ford Foundation president Darren Walker, National Urban League CEO Marc Morial, and Goldman Sachs partner Dina Powell.” Powell has been lured away from her gig at Goldman Sachs to work as an assistant to Donald Trump, as well as a “senior counselor for economic initiatives.”

Sellers added, “Trump explained that she wanted to learn from the efforts of leaders in their fields. We talked about entrepreneurship, equal pay, paid leave, and a lot about where the Donald Trump Administration may have the most opportunity: education.”

Ivanka Trump lays groundwork for policy role in Washington

On Thursday, she attended a dinner with female executives at the home of her friend Wendi Deng, ex-wife of media executive Rubert Murdoch. The dinner was put together by Dina Powell, a Goldman Sachs partner who is joining the Trump administration as an assistant to the president and senior counselor for economic initiatives. Powell has been advising Ivanka Trump and is expected to continue working closely with her.

Other guests included MSNBC “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski, model Christy Turlington Burns, former White House press secretary Dana Perino, Xerox Chairperson Ursula Burns, Deloitte CEO Cathy Engelbert, Glamour Editor-in-Chief Cynthia Leive and Time Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs. Another attendee, Pattie Sellers, executive director of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summits, wrote on Fortune.com that Ivanka Trump “explained that she wanted to learn from the efforts of leaders in their fields.”

Also there was Sheila Marcelo, founder of www.care.com, a website that connects families with caregivers, said an attendee who spoke on condition of anonymity because it was a private dinner. Marcelo spoke about the high cost of caregiving, both for children and adult family members.

Illegal POS Kidnapped and Raped Autistic Woman for 3 Days

Illegal Immigrant Accused of Repeatedly Raping, Kidnapping Autistic Woman

An illegal immigrant, along with another man, is accused of kidnapping and repeatedly raping a woman with autism while holding her against her will.

Luis Arnold Lopez-Lara, a 25-year-old illegal immigrant, and 23-year-old Helmer Alexander Erazo allegedly kidnapped the 22-year-old woman with autism after she left her residence after being upset, according to Ozarks First.

The woman was reportedly walking past a mobile home when Lopez-Lara and Erazo offered the woman alcohol and told her to come inside. A third man told warned the girl not to listen to the two men.

The woman was held against her will for three days, according to the victim, where Lopez-Lara repeatedly sexually assaulted and raped her.

Lopez-Lara allegedly gave the woman a beer, leaving her drunk, though she repeatedly tried to fend the illegal immigrant off and escape, but was told she would be killed if she resisted.

The victim also told police that Lopez-Lara and Erazo starved her for the three days, giving her Mexican food which she did not want to eat and then only giving her water, chips and a candy bar. According to the victim, she hid in a closet one day and was found by Erazo who grabbed her by the neck and threw her up against a wall.

Local neighborhood residents say they fear for their children’s safety and that they cannot believe the incident occurred in their backyard.

“I haven’t let her ride the bus, I don’t want her out in the neighborhood, I don’t want her unsupervised,” neighborhood resident Lindsey Smith told Ozarks First.

“To have it literally be in our backyard and can throw a stone at these guys is horrible,” Smith said.

“Horrible, absolutely horrible. We’ve never had anything like this go on,” Smith continued. “We’ve never felt like we really had to lock our doors, lock our cars and watch our kids at night. Just not the town I grew up in anymore.”

Lopez-Lara and Erazo are being charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, rape and the illegal immigrant is facing deportation. Two other Hispanic men who witnessed the kidnapping and sexual assaults are awaiting charges.

Lopez-Lara is being held by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office without bond and Erazo is being held on a $150,000 bond.
