The owner of Treats Family Restaurant in Lonsdale, Dan Ruedinger, told a local CBS News affiliate that business has been booming since he posted a sign outside that reads, “Muslims Get Out.”
Mr. Ruedinger said he had to call in three extra workers Monday to keep up with the demand.
“Some Muslims are good people and want a better life. They need to step up, take control and hold the others accountable,” he told the Lonsdale News Review.
The restaurant has attracted some protesters who say the sign promotes hate in their community.
“I get it, it’s his right to say what he wants to say,” demonstrator Payten Estepp told CBS. “But that’s giving Lonsdale a bad rap to everyone that drives by on 19, which is a very busy road, so people are going to see that and they’re going to think Lonsdale as a whole, as a community, is as crass as that sign.”
Police were called to the restaurant Monday afternoon after a demonstrator started to pull the letters off the sign. Lonsdale Police Chief Jason Schmitz said the owner told her to stop and a small “altercation” occurred, the News Review reported.
There were no injuries reported and no arrests made, police said.
Mr. Ruedinger said he has no plans to take down the sign.
Officials said Saturday’s stabbing attack at Crossroads Center mall in St. Cloud appeared to be the work of a “lone attacker,” and federal authorities are investigating whether it was a terrorist act inspired or directed by the Islamic State.
All of the stabbing victims — eight men, one woman and a 15-year-old girl — have been treated for their wounds and released from hospital.
The suspected attacker, 22-year-old Dahir A. Adan, was described by authorities as a young Somali man who was dressed as a security guard and referred to Allah during the mall assault, reportedly asking at least one victim if they were Muslim.
Adan was fatally shot by an off-duty police officer, ending the attack.
The attack in St. Cloud began shortly after an explosion in a crowded New York City neighborhood injured 29 people. Hours before that, a pipe bomb exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey, before a 5K race. But President Obama said Monday that authorities see no connection between the New York area explosions and the Minnesota stabbing.
