A California school district has put teacher Gregory Salcido on administrative leave after a video went viral in which he can be heard calling U.S. troops the “lowest of the low” and a “bunch of dumb shits,” according to a new report.
Salcido, who is also a city councilman in Pico Rivera, was also removed from the council’s committees after local officials condemned the comments, which were made to a group of high school students, a CBS News affiliate also reported.
The moves come amid a public firestorm over Salcido’s anti-military rant that prompted the Pentagon to respond on Monday. Phones have been ringing off the hook at the Pico Rivera high school and city hall with demands for him to resign, according to the Whittier Daily News, which first reported the administrative leave decision.
The Pentagon’s top outreach official yesterday called the comments “very uninformed” and said it was an example of why the military needs to better educate the public about its role.
The unidentified student who recorded Salcido told Fox News radio that the teacher had called him out in front of the class for wanting to join the military.

“I told him it’s a family tradition; it’s something I’ve been wanting to do as a kid,” the student told the radio show. “And he ended up saying, ‘So if it was a family tradition to beat women, would you continue it?’”
The student then sat down and started recording with his cell phone to show his parents.
But supporters, who appeared to be loyal students, popped up on Twitter using the hashtag #JusticeForSauce and called for Salcido to be reinstated.
In the video posted on YouTube, Salcido can be heard repeatedly warning his students not to join the military and criticizing the quality of its troops.
“We all have night-vision goggles, all that kind of stuff, and we can’t freakin’ control these dudes wearing freakin’ robes and chanclas [flip-flops] because we have a bunch of dumb shits over there,” Salcido said. “Think about the people you know who are over there, your freakin’ stupid uncle Louie, or whatever, they’re dumb shits. They’re not like high-level thinkers, they’re not academic people, they’re not intellectual people. They’re the freakin’ lowest of the low.”
He also told his high school students that signing up to serve is similar to prostitution.
“I don’t understand why we let the freakin’ military guys come over here and recruit you at school. We don’t have pimps come into school. Anyone interested in being a ho [whore]? And they’re going to freakin’ lie to you,” Salcido said.
At one point, he addresses a student who is wearing a Marine Corps shirt.
“Why are you wearing that Marines shirt? I thought you were going to college,” he asked the student.
The student tells him, “I am, I just had the shirt.” But Salcido warns him not to wear it to school.
“Why would you wear something that you can’t freakin’ support? Don’t ever wear that again, don’t ever wear it here,” Salcido said.
A group of student-activists at the University of Florida painted their pants in fake blood to simulate menstrual flow earlier this week in order to protest the lack of free menstrual products on the school’s campus.
Calling it a “bleed-in,” about two dozen students participated in the faux-menses demonstration on campus, according to The Independent Florida Gator.
“If you’re disgusted with our bloody pants, then maybe you should rethink whether or not this is important for everybody or if everybody would use it,” 30-year-old student Jenny Boylan said, according to The Gator. “I think you all collectively benefit from me not bleeding in your seat.”
The protest comes after the university’s student government voted against a proposition to provide free menstrual products to women on campus.

Although organizers did not expect everyone to paint their pants, they hoped the visual inspires students to advocate for accessible menstrual products.
Shannon Mathew, a UF psychology and sociology senior, was one of the first students to paint their pants at the protest.
The 21-year-old said she’s had no access to a tampon in an emergency too many times to count.
“This is a part of reproductive justice,” Mathew said. “I’m not ashamed of my period, and I don’t think anyone should be.”
A Change.org petition in support of free menstrual products at the university garnered 3,200 signatures last semester.

Taco Bell employee is facing arrest after allegedly throwing a “hot burrito” at his manager because he was “upset over having to work the morning shift,” South Carolina police report.
Spartanburg cops were called to a Taco Bell Monday afternoon after employee Christopher Dalton got into a dispute with Patricia Keeley, his manager.
Keeley told an officer that Dalton was upset over his work schedule and “was getting into several verbal disputes with other coworkers.” Keeley said that when she told Dalton to “stop being a crybaby,” he exploded.
Dalton allegedly “slung” a burrito at Keeley, who told police that “the melted cheese got all over her left arm and went all down her left side and leg.” Keeley added that the airborne burrito “made a mess of the entire kitchen as well, getting cheese over all the appliances.”
Before storming out of the fast food restaurant (pictured below), Dalton “took off his headset and broke it on his knee and threw it on the ground, causing it to break into several pieces.”
After taking photos of “Keeley and the mess made,” police filed for a warrant charging Dalton, a Spartanburg resident, with misdemeanor assault.

After Hawaii emergency officials confirmed that an alert about an inbound ballistic missile was a mistake, they said the employee who pushed the wrong button feels awful about the panic-inducing incident.
Vern Miyagi, who oversees the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (EMA), said at a news conference late Saturday that the civil defense employee who pushed the wrong button regrets what took place.
An emergency alert of Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency, which was sent to the islands early Saturday morning, read: “BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”
“This guy feels bad, right. He’s not doing this on purpose – it was a mistake on his part and he feels terrible about it,” said Miyagi in a press conference Saturday afternoon.
Miyagi, a retired Army major general, said the employee would be “counseled and drilled so this never happens again,” but he did not say whether there would be disciplinary measures.
Rather than triggering a test of the system, it went into actual event mode. He confirmed that to trigger the alert, there is a two-step process involving only one employee — who both triggers the alarm, then also confirms it.
“There is a screen that says, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?'” Miyagi said. The employee confirmed the alert, inadvertently causing a panic in a state already on edge over saber-rattling missile threats from North Korea.
Hawaii Gov. David Ige said in a statement Sunday that the false alert was “an unfortunate situation that has never happened before and will never happen again.”
“On behalf of the State of Hawai’i, I deeply apologize for this false alert that created stress, anxiety and fear of a crisis in our residents and guests,” Ige said.
At about 8:07 a.m. local time, Hawaii citizens received an emergency alert on their phone that read: “BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”
At 8:20 a.m. local time, Hawaii EMA tweeted that there was “NO missile threat” to the state. However, the tweet didn’t reach people who aren’t on the social media platform.
Around the same time, House Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, tweeted: “HAWAII – THIS IS A FALSE ALARM. THERE IS NO INCOMING MISSILE TO HAWAII. I HAVE CONFIRMED WITH OFFICIALS THERE IS NO INCOMING MISSILE.”
Roughly 15 minutes later, the U.S. Pacific Command issued a statement, clarifying there was “no ballistic missile threat to Hawaii.”
It wasn’t until 38 minutes after the first warning — at 8:45 a.m. — that Hawaii’s EMA alerted mobile devices across the islands that that initial alert was a false alarm.
“If it was a mistake and someone pushed a button they shouldn’t have pushed, then why the 38 minute delay?” asked Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, D-Hawaii, in an interview with Fox News. “The next question is, why don’t we have a better fail-safe?”
Hanabusa, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, vowed she would hold Capitol Hill hearings about the incident.
“The real issue that I think we as a state now has to deal with is how do you build back public confidence and public trust?” Hanabusa said. “So the first thing we’ve got to do is explain to people how it happened … and why we were unable to correct it.”
At the news conference late Saturday, Miyagi said that there will now be a two-person rule implemented for sending test alerts and actual alerts. He also offered an apology for the stresses resulting from the false alarm.
“I deeply apologize for the trouble and the heartbreak that we caused today,” Miyagi said, taking responsibility for the incident as he called it a result of human error. “We made a mistake.”
He added that EMA will “hold off” on future tests of the system “until we get this squared away.”

Gov. Ige said Saturday is “a day that most of us will never forget,” a day Hawaii residents thought “our worst nightmare might be happening.”
“I know firsthand that was happened today was totally unacceptable and many in our community was deeply affected by this,” Ige said. “And I’m sorry for that pain and confusion that anyone might’ve experienced.”
Hawaii House Speaker Scott Saiki said the system state residents have been told to rely on failed miserably on Saturday.
“Clearly, government agencies are not prepared and lack the capacity to deal with emergency situations,” Saiki said. He also noted that the State House would begin an immediate investigation.
Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas promised to bring his articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump for a vote on the House floor next week.
Green said that his effort to impeach the president will put him on the “right side of history.
The Texas congressman, along with five other House Democrats, introduced articles of impeachment against the president in November. Green brought forth articles of impeachment on the House floor in early December, but it failed in a decidedly. House lawmakers effectively killed Green’s effort, voting 364-58 to sideline the measure.
The congressmen listed a number of charges against the president in their December articles, including: obstruction of justice, a violation of the Constitution’s foreign emoluments clause, a violation of the Constitution’s domestic emoluments clause, undermining the federal judiciary process and undermining the press.
The articles primarily focused on Trump’s handing of the termination of former FBI Director James Comey, and potential conflicts of interest with Trump’s businesses and properties while he’s served as president.
An Arkansas man has been arrested on suspicion of capital murder after he told police he stabbed his wife to death for changing the television channel.
Tony Thomas, 58, of Carlisle, went outside to smoke and noticed the channel had been changed from the football game he had been watching.
Thomas asked his wife, Elke, what the score was before things escalated into an argument, according to a court document obtained by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
Thomas reportedly told police that his wife started the argument by yelling at him before he grabbed a knife and stabbed her, court documents state.
“He claimed he’d blacked out and when he ‘came to,’ he was over her with a knife in his hands,” according to an affidavit from the Lonoke County Sheriff’s Office.
Court documents state that the 58-year-old suspect called the sheriff’s office and requested the dispatcher bring a “meat wagon and police” because he stabbed his wife.
One witness said she “heard glass break” and “saw Tony stabbing Elke” when she walked into the living room.
Deputies say they found Elke’s body covered in a blanket and tarp in the couple’s backyard and a knife near the body.
“He admitted to dragging her outside and calling the sheriff’s office,” Anthony Counts, a detective with the Lonoke County Sheriff’s Office, wrote in the affidavit.
Chuck Graham, the Lonoke County prosecuting attorney, said that Thomas was charged as a habitual offender because of his rap sheet of felony crimes.
Thomas is being held on a $1 million bond in the Lonoke County jail, according to Fox News. It is not clear whether Thomas has retained an attorney. He is scheduled to appear in court January 22.
